Dairakudakan
Founded as one of the first Butoh dance companies in 1972, Dairakudakan is the product of Akaji
Maro, based on his strong beliefs on"Tempu-Tenshiki"*1 and "Miburi-Teburi"*2. It emerged on to
the international scene in 1982 with the world premiere of "Kaiin no Uma~The sea dappled horse"
in Avignon, France. Since then, the word, g Butoh h has spread out throughout the world and the
style of dance,hButohh has been a@great impact on other contemporary dances.
In addition to his passion for creating new work, Maro's other mission is to encourage his company
members to develop their own way of expression. He believes in the idea of "Ichinin-Ippa"*3. As a
result, there are several dance ensembles within the main company that constantly present works
as Kochuten performance created by the company members of Dairakudakan. Dairakudakan has
performed Mr. Maro's work in over 10 countries. In 2007 the Company has been presented not only
Maro's reconstructed repertoires, but also Kochuten performance by the members of Dairakudakan
in Paris France and New York City, USA.
Dairakudakan has received numerous awards including the Japan Critics Awards in
1974, 1987, 1996, and 1999.
*1 "Tempu-Tenshiki"- The word created by Maro. It means that, "Being born in the world is a great
talent itself."
*2 "Miburi-Teburi"- It originally means that the way of using (moving) our hands and bodies. Here,
Maro uses the word as a way of approaching our daily, elementary movements to be incorporated
into his works.
*3 "Ichinin-Ippa"(One dancer, one school)-The idea that each individual should be able to express
/create her/his own movement vocabularies.
